Is Hydroxychloroquine And Azithromycin The Possible Cure For COVID-19?

It is quite unfortunate that Corona virus (COVID-19) have put the world in an absolute pause due to the way the virus spreads rapidly since the outbreak began. It is unexpected and new, causing a sense of loss of control and death cases globally.

COVID-19 caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an infectious disease that was first discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province.

The transmission of the virus is via respiratory droplet from cough and sneezes within a range of about 1.8 meters (6ft) and of course indirect contacts through contaminated surfaces.

The virus can survive on surfaces for 72 hours. COVID-19 symptoms are; Cough, Sore throat, Shortness of breath, Fever, Runny nose, Headache, Fatigue, Muscle aches, unexplained loss of taste or smell, Diarrhea.

Although, infected patients can also be asymptomatic, meaning they do not display any symptoms despite having the virus in their systems. The disease can cause severe respiratory problems such as pneumonia in both lungs, kidney failure, and eventually lead to death.

Treatment for COVID-19

Sadly, there is no vaccine available yet to prevent infection of COVID-19.

Hydroxychloroquine, with a brand name Plaquenil, is an antimalaria drugs, it is also used to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis.

Side effects of Hydroxychloroquine

This includes;

Headaches
Itching
Stomach upset
Weakness
Hair lightening or Loss
Dizziness
Muscle pain
Rash
Irritability

Hydroxychloroquine can effectively treat disease manifestations, such as joint pain and rashes, reduce thrombotic events; and prolong survival.

Unfortunately, hydroxychloroquine cannot possibly treat infected COVID-19 patients due to the severity of its side effects.

Basically, when a virus enters the body, it infects cells, and triggers the cells to replicate, thereby making exact copies of the virus. However, replicate into copies of corona virus.

Whereas Azithromycin is an antibacterial drugs that is used to treat bacterial infections such as Pneumonia, Traveler’s diarrhea, Strep throat, Middle ear infections(Otitis media), sinusitis and of course can be used to treat sexually transmitted infections, such as Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia.

Side effects of Azithromycin

This includes;

Vomiting
Allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis
Nausea
Abdominal pain

Can hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin fight against COVID-19?

The combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin can only prevent patients with symptoms of pneumonia and shortness of breath from progressing further in their illness.

Secondly, azithromycin can help reduce the over reaction of the immune system induced by virus once it enters and activates the immune system.

Although, there is not enough medical data to prove that combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin can fight against COVID-19 yet except to relieve symptoms.

In the mean time in order to be safe we need to stick to the preventive measures;

Regular washing of hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds.

Sanitize your hand with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow when you cough or sneeze. Or used a tissue paper when you cough or sneeze, discard immediately in a trash bin after use.

Practice social distancing, keep a distance of 6ft between yourself and others.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Clean and disinfect touched surfaces frequently such as tables, light switches, chairs, phones, doorknobs.
Wear a face mask in the public.
